Result of the animal feed monitoring in the fiscal year 2009

1 Mycotoxins

A total of 1,603 formula feed and mixed feed samples and 1,784 feed ingredient samples of 34 types were subjected to monitoring program conducted by the Food and Agriculture Materials Inspection Center (FAMIC) for 19 mycotoxins.
The results of monitoring for aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol and zearalenone-regulated by the guiding tolerance of toxic substances-from April to December 2009 are summarized as follows.

1.1 Aflatoxin B1

A total of 200 formula feed samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. The highest value detected was 0.007ppm. No sample exceeded the maximum residue level (MRL), or 0.01ppm set by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
A total of 168 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxin B1 was detected mainly from maize, by-products of maize, and soybean meal. The highest value detected was 0.026ppm in copra meal imported from the Philippines, while the highest value detected was 0.01ppm in maize imported from the United States of America (US).

1.2 Deoxynivalenol

A total of 107 formula feed samples were analyzed for deoxynivalenol. The highest value detected was 1ppm in formula feed for dairy cows. No sample exceeded the MRL (4.0ppm).
A total of 144 feed ingredients samples were analyzed. Deoxynivalenol was detected mainly from maize, barley, and their by-products. The highest values detected in maize, corn gluten feed, corn gluten meal, and corn distiller's dried grains with solubles were 1 ppm (maize from the US), 5.8ppm (corn gluten feed from China), 5.2ppm (corn gluten meal from China, and 3.2ppm (corn distiller's dried grains with solubles from the US).

1.3 Zearalenone

A total of 98 formula feed samples were analyzed for zearalenone. The highest value detected was 0.17ppm in formula feed for breeding pigs, finishing pigs, and dairy cows. No sample exceeded the MRL (1.0ppm).
A total of 145 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for zearalenone. Zearalenone was detected mainly from maize, barley and their by-products. The highest value detected was 5.4ppm in corn gluten meal from China.

2 Heavy metals

A total of 378 formula and mixed feed samples, 96 fish meal samples, 39 meat-and-bone meal samples and one rice straw sample were subjected to monitoring program conducted by the FAMIC for cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury.

2.1 Cadmium

A total of 126 formula feed samples were analyzed for cadmium. The highest value detected was 0.4ppm in formula feed for chickens. No sample exceeded the MRL (1.0 ppm).
A total of 32 fish meal samples and 13 meat-and-bone meal samples were analyzed for cadmium. The highest values detected were 2.3ppm and 0.06ppm in domestically produced fish meal and meat-and-bone meal respectively. No sample exceeded the MRL (2.5ppm).

2.2 Lead

A total of 126 formula feed samples were analyzed for cadmium. The highest value detected was 0.4ppm in formula feed for chickens. No sample exceeded the MRL (1.0 ppm).
A total of 32 fish meal samples and 13 meat-and-bone meal samples were analyzed for cadmium. The highest values detected were 2.3ppm and 0.06ppm in domestically produced fish meal and meat-and-bone meal respectively. No sample exceeded the MRL (2.5ppm).

2.3 Mercury

A total of 126 formula feed samples were analyzed for mercury. The highest value detected was 0.11ppm in formula feed for piglets. No sample exceeded the MRL (0.4 ppm).
A total of 32 fish meal samples and 13 meat-and-bone meal samples were analyzed for mercury. The highest values detected were 0.97ppm and 0.24ppm in domestically produced fish meal and meat-and-bone meal respectively. No sample exceeded the MRL (1.0ppm).

2.4 Arsenic

One sample of rice straw imported from China was analyzed for arsenic. As a result, 3.1ppm of mercury, below the MRL (7ppm), was detected.

3 Agricultural chemicals

A total of 575 feed and feed ingredient samples were subjected to the monitoring program conducted by the FAMIC for up to 152 agricultural chemicals. The results are summarized below. No sample exceeded the MRL.
A total of 285 formula feed samples were analyzed for 144 agricultural chemicals. As a result, the following 10 agricultural chemicals were detected.
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 17 samples the highest value detected being 200ppb.
・Malathion was detected in seven samples the highest value detected being 150ppb.
・Propargite was detected in six samples the highest value detected being 64ppb.
・Fenitrothion was detected in four samples the highest value detected being 50ppb.
・Chlorpropham was detected in three samples the highest value detected being 160 ppb.
・EPN was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 49ppb.
・Chlorpyrifos was detected in one sample at a level of 40ppb.
・Piperonylbutoxide was detected in one sample at a level of 32ppb.
・Pirimiphos-methyl was detected in one sample, at a level of 58ppb.
・Fenpropathin was detected in one sample, at a level of 120ppb.
A total of 290 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for agricultural chemicals. As a result, the following 15 chemicals were detected.
・Malathion was detected in 12 samples the highest value detected being 240ppb in domestically produced wheat bran.
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 10 samples the highest value detected being 380ppb in grain sorghum imported from the US.
・Fenitrothion was detected in eight samples the highest value detected being 170 ppb in gluten meal imported from China.
・Pirimiphos-methyl was detected in three samples the highest value detected being 370ppb in grain sorghum imported from the US.
・EPN was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 75ppb in maize imported from the US.
・Chlorpyrifos was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 44ppb in maize imported from the US.
・Propargite was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 37ppb in domestically produced wheat bran.
・Propiconazole was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 240 ppb in domestically produced barley bran.
・Glyphosate was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 127ppb in oats hay imported from Australia.
・Glufosinate was detected in two samples, the highest value detected being 25ppb in in oats hay imported from Australia.
・Endosulphan was detected in two samples the highest value detected being 21ppb in rice straw recycled from tatami mats.
・Tebuconazole was detected in one sample of corn distiller's dried grain with solubles imported from the US at a level of 100ppb.
・Trifluralin was detected in one sample of alfalfa imported from the US, at a level of 1,900ppb.
・Methidathion was detected in one sample of squeezed orange juice waste produced in Japan, at a level of 460ppb.
・Methoxychlor was detected in one sample of rice straw recycled from tatami mats, at a level of 6ppb.

4 Other contaminants

4.1 Nitrate form nitrogen

A total of 21 hay samples, including nine sudan grass samples, eight alfalfa samples, two bermuda grass samples, one ryegrass sample, and one oats hay sample, were analyzed for nitrate form nitrogen. The highest value detected was 2,100ppm in alfalfa imported from the US. When feeding hay grass, the following guideline should be referred to, and pay special attention to the handling of the grass.

4.2 Malachite green and leuco malachite green

A total of nine aquaculture feed samples and 21 fish meal samples were analyzed for malachite green and leuco malachite green. No contaminants were detected from either of these samples.

4.3 Melamine

One aquaculture feed sample, 12 fish meal sample and one garlic powder sample were analyzed for melamine. No contaminant was detected from any of these samples.
