Annual Reports of Monitoring Inspection of Animal Feed in the fiscal year 2010

1 Mycotoxins

A total of 2,558 formula feed and mixed feed samples and 3,117 feed ingredient samples of 36 types were subjected to monitoring program conducted by FAMIC (Food and Agricultural Materials Inspection Center) for 18 mycotoxins. The results of monitoring for aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol and zearalenone regulated by the guiding tolerance of toxic substances from April 2010 to March 2011 are summarized as follows:

1.1 Aflatoxin B1

A total of 257 formula feed samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. The detected highest value was 0.02ppm in the chicken feed. No sample exceeded the standard value (0.01ppm for the growing and dairy cattle feed, 0.02ppm for the other livestock) setting by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
A total of 271 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxin B1 was detected mainly from corn, by-products of corn, soybean meal, copra meal, cottonseed, brewer’s grain and cassava. The detected highest values of each feed ingredient samples were 0.055ppm in corn cob meal imported from Thailand, 0.031ppm in corn imported from USA, 0.036ppm in copra meal imported from Philippines, 0.03ppm in domestic corn gluten meal, 0.013ppm in domestic corn gluten feed, 0.007ppm in soybean meal imported from India, 0.004ppm in cottonseed imported from USA, 0.001ppm in DDGS imported from USA and 0.0004ppm in brewer’s grain imported from Vietnam.

1.2 Deoxynivalenol

A total of 214 formula feed samples were analyzed for deoxynivalenol. The detected highest value was 2.2ppm in formula feed for dairy cattles. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (4ppm or 5ppm (after 6th October 2010) for the cattle (over 3 months-old), 3ppm for the chicken, 1ppm for the other livestock).
A total of 298 feed ingredient samples were analyzed. Deoxynivalenol was detected mainly from corn, grain, by-products of corn and grain, rapeseed meal, soybean meal, rice bean and bakery waste. The detected highest values of each feed ingredient samples were 3.6ppm in corn imported from USA, 1.9ppm in domestic wheat, 0.07ppm in barley imported from Ukraine, 7.2ppm in domestic corn gluten feed, 0.71ppm in domestic corn gluten meal, 8.4ppm in DDGS imported from USA, 0.62ppm in domestic bran, 0.02ppm in domestic rapeseed meal, 1.1ppm in soybean meal imported from India, 0.05ppm in domestic rice bran and 0.18ppm in domestic bakery waste.

1.3 Zearalenone

A total of 208 formula feed samples were analyzed for zearalenone. The detected highest value was 0.35ppm in formula feed for starting period broiler. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (1ppm).
A total of 261 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for zearalenone. Zearalenone was detected mainly from corn, grain, by-products of corn and grain, soybean meal, rice bran, brewer’s grain, sesame seed meal and beet pulp. The detected highest value was 6.4ppm in domestic corn gluten meal.

2 Heavy metals

A total of 470 formula and mixed feed samples, 94 fish meal samples, 54 meat-and-bone meal (MBM) samples and 12 rice straw samples were subjected to monitoring program conducted by FAMIC for cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury, which were established the standard value setting by MAFF.

2.1 Cadmium

A total of 153 formula feed samples were analyzed for cadmium. The detected highest value was 0.3ppm in formula feed for chicken. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (1ppm).
A total of 32 fish meal samples were analyzed for cadmium. The detected highest value was 2.2ppm in domestically produced fish meal. A total of 18 MBM samples were analyzed and the detected highest value was 0.26ppm in domestically produced MBM. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (3ppm).

2.2 Lead

A total of 153 formula feed samples were analyzed for lead. The detected highest value was 1.0ppm in formula feed for chicken. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (3.0ppm).
A total of 32 fish meal samples and 13 meat-and-bone meal samples were analyzed for cadmium. The highest values detected were 2.3ppm and 0.06ppm in domestically produced fish meal and meat-and-bone meal respectively. No sample exceeded the MRL (2.5ppm).

2.3 Mercury

A total of 149 formula feed samples were analyzed for mercury. The detected highest value was 0.21ppm in formula feed for chicken. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (0.4ppm).
A total of 30 fish meal samples and 18 MBM samples were analyzed for mercury. The detected highest values were 0.92ppm and 0.25ppm in domestic fish meal and MBM respectively. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (1ppm).

2.4 Arsenic

A total of 15 formula feed samples were analyzed for arsenic. The detected highest value was 0.26ppm in formula feed for growing piglet. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (2ppm).
A total of 3 rice straw samples were analyzed for arsenic. The detected highest value was 4.6ppm in sample imported from China. No sample exceeded the standard value setting by MAFF (7ppm).

3 Agricultural chemicals

A total of 552 feed and feed ingredient samples were subjected to the monitoring program conducted by FAMIC for up to 139 agricultural chemicals. The samples exceeded the standard value were summarized as follows,
・BHC was detected in one straw of old tatami mat sample.
・DDT was detected in one straw of old tatami mat sample.
・Endrin was detected in one straw of old tatami mat sample.
・Dieldrin was detected in one straw of old tatami mat sample.
・Pendimethalin was detected in one sample of alfalfa.
The agricultural chemicals which were not established the standard value did not detected.

A total of 272 formula feed samples were analyzed for 132 agricultural chemicals. As a result, the following 11 agricultural chemicals were detected:
・Pirimiphos-methyl was detected in 37 samples and the highest value was 230ppb.
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 17 samples and the highest value was 230ppb.
・Malathion was detected in 6 samples and the highest value was 220ppb.
・Fenitrothion was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 34ppb.
・Chlorpyrifos was detected in 3 samples and the highest value was 140ppb.
・EPN was detected in 3 samples and the highest value was 41ppb.
・Cyhalothrin was detected in 2 samples and the highest value was 29ppb.
・Pyriproxyfen was detected in 2 samples and the highest value was 250ppb.
・Acephate was detected in one sample and the value was 55ppb.
・Bifenthrin was detected in one sample and the value was 24ppb.
・Permethrin was detected in one sample and the value was 100ppb.

A total of 280 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for 135 agricultural chemicals.
As a result, the following 24 agricultural chemicals were detected.
・Malathion was detected in 14 samples and the highest value was 170ppb in domestic wheat bran.
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 9 samples and the highest value was 2,200ppb in domestic wheat bran.
・BHC was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 470ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・DDT was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 1,600ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Endorin was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 38ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Dieldrin was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 920ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Lindane was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 160ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Edifenphos was detected in 3 samples and the highest value was 50ppb in cassava imported from Thailand.
・Pirimiphos-methyl was detected in 2 samples and the highest value was 62ppb in brewer’s grains imported from Vietnum.
・Atrazine was detected in 2 samples of and the highest value was 52ppb in sudan grass imported from USA.
・Chlordane was detected in one sample and the value was 9ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Dimethoate was detected in one sample and the value was 96ppb in alfalfa imported from USA.
・Trifluralin was detected in one sample and the value was 36ppb in of alfalfa imported from USA.
・Bifenthrin was detected in one sample and the value was 120ppb in sudan grass imported from USA.
・Fenitrothion was detected in one sample and the value was 420ppb in domestic wheat bran.
・Flucythrinate was detected in one sample and the value was 48ppb in soybean meal imported from India.
・Flutolanil was detected in one sample and the value was 25ppb in domestic defatted rice bran.
・Propiconazole was detected in one sample and the value was 1,800ppb in toll fescue imported from USA.
・Hexachlorobenzene was detected in one sample and the value was 2ppb in domestic straw of old tatami mat.
・Pendimethalin in one sample and the value was 440ppb in alfalfa imported from USA.

4 Other contaminants

4.1 Nitrate form nitrogen

A total of 18 hay samples, including 9 samples of sudan grass, 8 samples of alfalfa and one sample of clein grass were analyzed for nitrate form nitrogen. The detected highest values of each samples were 1,000ppm in sudan grass imported from USA, 860ppm in alfalfa imported from USA and 59ppm in clein grass imported from USA. When these hay grass are used for feeding, the following guideline should be referred and pay special attention to the handling of the grass.

4.2 Malachite green and leuco malachite green

A total of 27 samples of fish meal were analyzed for malachite green and leuco malachite green. No contaminants were detected from these samples.
