Annual Reports of Monitoring Inspection of Animal Feed in the fiscal year 2011

1 Mycotoxins

A total of 2,509 formula feed and mixed feed samples and 2,374 feed ingredient samples of 35 types were subjected to monitoring program conducted by FAMIC (Food and Agricultural Materials Inspection Center) for 18 mycotoxins. The results of monitoring for aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol and zearalenone regulated by the guiding tolerance of toxic substances from April 2011 to March 2012 are summarized as follows:

1.1 Aflatoxin B1

A total of 224 formula feed samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. The detected highest value was 0.013 ppm in the cattle feed intended neither to dairy nor to suckling cattle. No sample exceeded the standard value (0.01 ppm for growing animals and dairy cattle, 0.02 ppm for the other livestock) set by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
A total of 199 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxin B1 was detected mainly from corn, by-products of corn, soybean meal, copra meal, cottonseed, wheat bran and cacao husk. The detected highest values of each feed ingredient samples were 0.013 ppm in corn imported from USA, 0.042 ppm in corn cob meal imported from Thailand, 0.030 ppm in copra meal imported from Philippines, 0.012 ppm in domestic corn gluten meal, 0.009 ppm in domestic corn gluten feed, 0.003 ppm in soybean meal imported from India, 0.0009 ppm in cottonseed imported from Australia and 0.0005 ppm in domestic cacao husk.

1.2 Deoxynivalenol

A total of 218 formula feed samples were analyzed for deoxynivalenol. The detected highest value was 0.54 ppm in formula feed for cattles. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (4 ppm for the cattle (over 3 months-old), 1 ppm for the other livestock).
A total of 193 feed ingredient samples were analyzed. Deoxynivalenol was detected mainly from corn, grain, by-products of corn and grain, rapeseed meal, soybean meal, cottonseed, sweet potato and bakery waste. The detected highest values of each feed ingredient were 0.86 ppm in corn imported from USA, 0.028 ppm in wheat imported from Australia, 0.078 ppm in barley imported from Canada, 2.1 ppm in domestic corn gluten feed, 9.5 ppm in domestic corn gluten meal, 2.7 ppm in domestic corn cob meal, 3.7 ppm in DDGS imported from USA, 1.7 ppm in corn DDG imported from USA, 0.61 ppm in cottonseed imported from Australia, 0.021 ppm in sweet potato imported from China, 0.91 ppm in hominy feed imported from USA, 0.49 ppm in domestic wheat bran, 0.021 ppm in domestic rapeseed meal, 0.021 ppm in domestic soybean meal and 0.15 ppm in domestic bakery waste.

1.3 Zearalenone

A total of 224 formula feed samples were analyzed for zearalenone. The detected highest value was 0.38 ppm in formula feed for layer. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (1 ppm).
A total of 198 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for zearalenone. Zearalenone was detected mainly from corn, grain, by-products of corn and grain, cottonseed, sweet potato, soybean meal, soybean hull, rice bran, rapeseed meal and bakery waste. The detected highest value was 9.9 ppm in corn gluten meal imported from China.

2 Heavy metals

A total of 380 formula and mixed feed samples, 98 feed ingredients such as fish meal samples were subjected to monitoring program conducted by FAMIC for cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury, which were established the standard value setting by MAFF.

2.1 Cadmium

A total of 122 formula feed samples were analyzed for cadmium. The detected highest value was 0.31 ppm in formula feed for layer. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (1 ppm).
A total of 31 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for cadmium. The detected highest value was 2.0 ppm in domestic fish meal. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (3 ppm).

2.2 Lead

A total of 122 formula feed samples were analyzed for lead. The detected highest value was 1.7 ppm in formula feed for late broiler. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (3.0 ppm).
A total of 31 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for lead. The detected highest value was 1.4 ppm in domestic fish meal. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (7.5 ppm).

2.3 Mercury

A total of 122 formula feed samples were analyzed for mercury. The detected highest value was 0.19 ppm in formula feed for layer. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (0.4 ppm).
A total of 31 feed ingredient samples were analyzed for mercury. The detected highest value was 0.69 ppm in domestic fish meal. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (1 ppm).

2.4 Arsenic

A total of 14 formula feed samples were analyzed for arsenic. The detected highest value was 0.55 ppm in formula feed for layer. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (2 ppm).
A total of 5 rice straw samples were analyzed for arsenic. The detected highest value was 2.7 ppm in sample imported from China. No sample exceeded the standard value set by MAFF (7 ppm).

3 Agricultural chemicals

Feed and feed ingredient samples were subjected to the monitoring program conducted by FAMIC for a total of 48,715 data for 143 agricultural chemicals. No sample exceeded the standard values.
For formula feed samples, a total of 26,025 data were obtained for 130 agricultural chemicals. As a result, the following 7 agricultural chemicals were detected:
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 15 samples and the highest value was 820 ppb.
・Pirimiphos-methyl was detected in 14 samples and the highest value was 96 ppb.
・Malathion was detected in 9 samples and the highest value was 67 ppb.
・Fenitrothion was detected in 7 samples and the highest value was 280 ppb.
・Deltamethrin/tralomethrin was detected in 2 samples and the highest value was 220 ppb.
・Chlorpropham was detected in one sample and the value was 180 ppb.
・Diclofop-methyl was detected in one sample and the value was 29 ppb.

For feed ingredient samples, a total of 22,690 data were obtained for 136 agricultural chemicals.
As a result, the following 15 agricultural chemicals were detected:
・Chlorpyrifos-methyl was detected in 11 samples and the highest value was 400 ppb in domestic wheat bran.
・Malathion was detected in 11 samples and the highest value was 590 ppb in domestic wheat bran.
・Propiconazole was detected in 5 samples and the highest value was 5,900 ppb in ryegrass straw imported from USA.
・Propargite was detected in 3 samples and the highest value was 300 ppb in sudangrass imported from USA.
・Tebuconazole was detected in 2 samples and the highest value was 730 ppb in ryegrass straw imported from USA.
・Bifenthrin was detected in one ryegrass straw sample imported from USA and the value was 39 ppb.
・Chlorpyrifos was detected in one alfalfa hay sample imported from USA and the value was 160 ppb.
・Cyhalothrin was detected in one alfalfa hay sample imported from USA and the value was 130 ppb.
・EPN was detected in one domestic wheat bran sample and the value was 160 ppb.
・Flutolanil was detected in one domestic rice bran sample and the value was 36 ppb.
・Isoprothiolane was detected in one domestic rice bran sample and the value was 170 ppb.
・Trifluralin was detected in one alfalfa hay sample imported from USA and the value was 59 ppb.
・Methoprene was detected in one milo sample imported from Australia and the value was 49 ppb.
・Metominostrobin was detected in one domestic rice bran sample and the value was 26 ppb.
・Procymidone was detected in one barley straw sample imported from Australila and the value was 93 ppb.

4 Other contaminants

4.1 Nitrate form nitrogen

A total of 19 hay samples, including 11 sudangrass and 8 alfalfa were analyzed for nitrate form nitrogen. The detected highest values of each type of hay were 1,200 ppm in sudangrass imported from USA, 1,300 ppm in alfalfa imported from USA. When these hay grass are used for feeding, the following guideline should be referred and pay special attention to the handling of the grass.

4.2 Malachite green and leuco malachite green

A total of 17 samples of fish meal were analyzed for malachite green and leuco malachite green. No contaminants were detected from these samples.
